The Effect of Alcoholism On the Body

Alcoholism is a steadily growing problem in our society. In the United States, nearly 1 in every 13 adults suffers from issues with alcoholism. Even more disturbing, a countless number of teens between the ages of 14 and 17 have alcohol addiction issues.

These alarming numbers are proof that, now more than ever, there is a need for public awareness and education regarding the effects of alcoholism on the body and the damage alcohol does. These days, addiction treatment is widely available for individuals of all ages. It’s just a matter of spreading the word, making people aware — especially young people — of exactly how dangerous and damaging alcohol is. Below is a breakdown of just some of the damage alcoholism can cause to the human body:

Liver Damage

Our liver works to break down and filter out toxins and harmful substances as they pass through the body. This includes alcohol. Alcoholism can lead to chronic liver inflammation and scarring which results in a condition known as cirrhosis. Cirrhosis can affect the liver to the point that it is no longer able to function. Cirrhosis of the liver is oftentimes fatal.

Heart Problems

Excessive alcohol consumption can affect the circulatory system and the heart in a number of dangerous ways. These problems are all life-threatening. They include:

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Heart arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)
  • Cardiomyopathy (poisoning/atrophy of the heart’s muscles)

Skeletal Damage

Alcoholism prevents your body from producing new bone cells to replace older, more fragile ones. This leads to weakened, thinning bones and serious conditions such as Osteoporosis.

Immune System

Alcohol has a devastating effect on the body’s immune system. Chronic alcohol consumption significantly decreases the body’s ability to fend off germs, viruses, and all kinds of illnesses. Alcoholism increases the risk of developing a number of different types of cancer.

This is just a sampling of some of the most serious effects alcoholism has on the body. There are much more, not to mention the damage that is done to the physical brain, the mind, and the psychological functions required for us to live healthy, productive, happy lives.
