How to Talk to Your Loved One About Their Addiction
For many individuals, having a loved one who has an addiction is often difficult to cope with and accept. You may be wondering what you can do to help them and get them the treatment they need. However, one of the most difficult parts of being a support system for an addicted individual is effectively communicating with them. There are some things that you should know to do, and some to avoid, when talking to your loved one about their addiction and attempting to get them help.
Talk to Them When They’re Sober
This may seem difficult if your loved one is always using or drinking. Finding the right time to talk to them may be difficult, but catching them while they are sober is the best chance at getting a real shot at getting through to them. They often retain more of the information you are telling them, as well.
While you don’t want to come off abrasive or rude, be sure that you are not hiding your true feelings during this time. Let your loved one know what their actions are doing to you and the rest of your loved ones. Explain to them if you are worried or scared. Don’t attack your loved one, but don’t hold back how you are truly feeling.
Don’t Judge Them
It is reasonable to express your feelings to your loved one in a productive manner, but judging them can do more harm than good. This is especially true if you become too harsh in your criticisms. Understand that despite an initial choice to use or drink, the ability to give it up is much more difficult than you would think and it requires real help.
Don’t let frustration get the best of you. Because your loved one has an addiction, it may seem as though he or she is not paying attention or feels attacked by this kind of conversation. If you lose your cool, you may just end up triggering a reason for him or her to use or drink.
At the end of any conversation, make sure you are taking the time to offer help. Let them know you are there for them and you are willing to help them find the right place for treatment. Most of all, be a support system.
