How to Avoid an Addiction Relapse This Thanksgiving
The holidays are supposed to be a time for joy, spending time with your family and friends, and enjoying the gifts around you. Unfortunately, in many situations, it also means many parties and gatherings. For someone who has gone their lives without any kind of addiction, this is no big deal. But for others — those who have had an addiction and are in recovery — this can be a time filled with anxiety.
Whatever the addiction may be, there are tips you can utilize to help yourself avoid an addiction relapse this Thanksgiving. Make sure you are fully prepared when the time comes.
Choose Your Gatherings
Perhaps you were invited to get together with old friends who you were around during the time of your addiction. Another gathering is happening with your family. Make sure you choose which party you want to go to that won’t threaten your sobriety in any way. Often times, sticking with your support system is the best option because they understand what you’re going through and how to help.
Start Something New
You don’t have to fall into the same routine as before if you don’t want to. You can start something new that focuses on keeping yourself on the right path. Maybe stray away from parties completely, have small get-togethers, or even volunteer to occupy your time. Anything that keeps your mind off of potential temptation should be considered.
Set Up a “Sober Date”
If you are planning on going somewhere and you are not sure your self-control will be enough to keep you out of trouble, plan to bring a sober date with you. Find someone in your support system who is willing to attend the party with you. This way you have someone who understands what you are going through, you can talk to, and they can keep you away from your temptations.
