Getting Serious About Mental Health

There is definitely an interconnection between mental health and addiction. There is also a connection between having a mental illness and some form of substance abuse. Unfortunately, very little can be done until the patient is willing to admit that he or she has a problem. We see it all the time at Luminance Recovery.

Did you know that those whose suffer from mental health and illness issues consume more than the normal amount of alcohol, more so than the average person does?

Alcohol consumption for those battling substance abuse is between 30-70%.

Did you know that cigarettes also play a role in this? Those battling some kind of mental health issue consume between 30-70% more cigarettes than the average smoker.

Drugs is another big issue we see when a patient of ours has mental health issues. Most people will experiment with some type of drug at least once in their lifetime. The only difference is that most people who experiment try it and leave it alone. Those who battle addiction and mental health issues end up consuming more than their fair share.

Some of our patients require a single treatment. Others require a Dual-Diagnosis Treatment. This is when a patient is receiving treatment for more than one issue at the same time. Many of our patients are dealing with both drug and alcohol issues at the same time. This is where the Dual-Diagnosis Treatment comes in handy.

What Causes Addiction?

There are a number of factors that cause our patients to use and therefore abuse their substance of choice.

  1. Many of our patients here at Luminance Recovery suffer from depression. Something in their life caused them to be depressed. Some of our patients face traumatic events that they do not want to face again. Sometimes this leaves them feeling depressed. They want to numb the pain.
  2. Some of our patients are already pre-disposed to some sort of addiction status. It can be inherited from a family member, etc.
  3. Some of our patients face things like social anxiety, panic attacks, lack of motivation, etc. It all interconnects. They take the drug or drink the alcohol to compensate for what they do not have. Every patient is different.

Are you someone who needs help? Are you ready to admit that you need some help to get clean? There is no shame in what you are doing. You have already taken the first step. You have admitted there is a problem.
