Warning Signs of Prescription Drug Addiction
Addiction is turning into a pandemic in the United States. There are several forms of addiction, but the one our blog will discuss is prescription drug addiction, which has become one of the more dangerous addictions. We will be going over the warning signs as well as what you can do to help if a loved one or someone you know is struggling.
Prescription Drug Abuse Warning Signs
Prescription drug abuse has many warning signs associated with it. The more you know about it, the easier it will be to spot if someone you love is showing signs of prescription drug abuse. Three main types of prescription drugs are abused, and they are opioids like Vicodin and OxyContin, sedatives like Xanax or Ambien, and stimulants like Adderall and Dexedrine. The warning signs for each of these categories are listed below.
- Opioid Abuse Warning Signs: Constipation, nausea, slowed breathing rate, mood fluctuations between euphoria and normal, confusion, and increased pain levels with higher dosages.
- Sedative Abuse Warning Signs: Unsteady gait, confusion, slurred speech, poor concentration, dizziness, and memory problems.
- Stimulant Abuse Warning Signs: Reduced appetite, agitation, higher body temperature, insomnia, irregular heartbeat, anxiety, and paranoia.
These signs and symptoms are specific to the three separate categories of prescription drug abuse. There are some symptoms that cover all of these categories and could point to your loved one having a problem. If you notice your loved one or friend stealing, forging prescriptions, having extreme mood swings or hostility, getting multiple prescriptions from different medical professionals, or having an increase or decrease in sleeping levels, you should have a talk with them. If you are too afraid to approach them on your own, you can ask other family members or acquaintances to assist you.
Prescription drug abuse is ravaging the United States, and it is already becoming a larger problem than can be easily handled.
